Becoming a mother isn’t just adding a child to your existing life.

It’s a rebirth of you.

So while you felt ready for baby’s birth, your birth was a different story. And giving birth can feel like being ripped in half.

Motherhood hit me hard.

I had always wanted to be a mom. And felt ready to take that step. Yet when I peed on that stick, my life flashed before my eyes.

I sensed deep, unsettling change, but couldn’t clearly articulate it. I was supposed to be purely grateful, but my emotions were mixed.

So, I labeled myself bad; selfish; unworthy.

When the reality of motherhood paled in comparison to the vision I had conjured, I became sadder. Madder. Felt like I was broken.

I couldn’t understand why I was struggling so hard — especially when everyone else seemed to be thriving.

Then I learned about matrescence.

Finally I had a word to explain my world.

MAT-RES-ENCE

/muh’tress.ents/ noun

  1. the ongoing process of becoming a mother

  2. the complete transformation and identity shift of a woman as she moves through motherhood.

  3. an experience of disorientation and reorientation, marked by an acceleration of changes in multiple domains: physical, psychological, social, and spiritual

I’M  MOM  DOG.

As an ICF certified matrescence coach, a yoga teacher with over a decade of experience, and a mother of two, I have the tools and presence to support new moms who feel similarly out of whack.

I know what it’s like to feel caught between the woman you were and the one you want to become. And I know you can make yourself feel whole again.

You’ve become irritable, snappy, or ragey. You’re yelling a lot, and hating yourself for it.

You’re drowning your never ending to-do list; you feel like you’ll never catch up.

You feel guilty for wanting to go back to work — and guilty for sending your kids to daycare.

You thought motherhood would make you feel whole. But it’s left you with an unexplainable hole.

You’re resentful. Burnt out. Overwhelmed and underwhelmed by your myriad responsibilities.

It’s not that you’re bad, unfit, or failing. It’s that you need be seen, heard, and understood.

MATRESCENCE COACHING

UNLEASH THE MOM YOU’RE MEANT TO BE

As a mom, you feel like a shadow of yourself. Like you’re straddling the woman you were and the one you thought you’d become. Like you’re unrecognizably angry. Like nothing you do is good enough. Like you miss your pre-baby life. Like you’re a monster for thinking such a thing.

Sis, you’re not the only one.

Matrescence is an enormous rite of passage that goes largely unrecognized. Without an understanding of the all-encompassing transformation motherhood brings, moms wind up pissed off, uncertain, and misunderstood. In our effort to become the mother we’re “supposed” to be, we end up losing who we are.

With matrescence coaching, you can find yourself again.

ONE-ON-ONE COACHING:

  • Mom Dog’s core coaching program, these six structured sessions explore matrescence and motherhood through both a broad cultural perspective and an intimate personal lens. Expect pre-session education and reflection, in-session meditation and discussion, and ongoing mindfulness as you walk the pathway back to yourself. This is the best place to begin.

  • Less structured than The Awakening, The Companion provides three months of bi-weekly support for whatever is coming up during this phase of motherhood. This is ideal for mothers who’ve already completed The Awakening.

  • This 90-minute intensive is for the mom who knows something’s off, but hasn’t had the time or space to process it. In this hour-and-a-half long session, you’ll get to hear yourself think and speak, get clear on what’s actually bothering you, and leave with one or two grounded changes that feel doable.

In Mom Dog’s Nashville-based Mother Circles, you’ll connect with women navigating the same messy transition and in so doing, create your pack.
